Natural dyes are a non-toxic and environmentally friendly way to achieve color from plants, insects, mushrooms, lichens, and shellfish. They eliminate the use of harsh chemicals and toxins that are found in synthetic dyes and the impact they have on those working with the dyes and the environment.
The molecular structure of fabrics make it challenging for natural dyes to adhere evenly, tones and evenness may vary.
Natural dying is more time and labor intensive than synthetic dyes. A sequence of steps is required to ensure the longevity of color and lightfastness.
Naturally dyed garments are sensitive to sun exposure and washing method. To ensure colorfastness, do not dry or store in direct contact with the sun. Wash with a natural or pH neutral detergent in cool water. Hang dry.
