Alanna’s Journey Through Dance, Stilts, and Empowerment
Welcome back to another episode of the Community Conversations! Our recent conversation with Alanna Gibson-Rex, a multidisciplinary artist and performer, left us inspired by her extraordinary journey and unwavering dedication to creating beauty through movement and storytelling.
Alanna’s introduction to the world of performance began humbly, grounded in a love for dance and the performing arts. Over time, her passion for movement led her to an unexpected skill: stilt walking. What started as an intimidating challenge—balancing on stilts while dancing—evolved into the core of her artistry.
“When I’m on stilts, I feel emotionally and spiritually lifted,” Alanna shared. She described the feeling as freeing, likening it to soaring above challenges while maintaining her balance in every sense of the word.
Her journey wasn’t without challenges. Alanna candidly discussed the physical and mental demands of performing. “Being a stilt performer means trusting not just your body but the people around you. It’s dangerous work, but it’s also magical.”
Alanna co-founded The People Circus in 2021, a company rooted in principles of inclusion, empowerment, and kindness. These values were a response to the occasional exploitative and unkind practices she witnessed early on in the entertainment industry.
“The People Circus exists because we need spaces where artists feel safe, valued, and celebrated,” she explained. Alanna’s leadership reflects her belief in fostering environments that nurture creativity while prioritizing mental health and emotional well-being.
Beyond her physical expertise, Alanna is a storyteller who conveys resilience and strength. She recounted moments of adversity—from losing loved ones to navigating the competitive and often unpredictable professional and social environments. Yet, she remains steadfast in her mission to empower others.
Her advice for young artists is useful and relevant: “Remember, when someone discredits you, it’s usually a “them” problem, it’s not about you. It’s about their own insecurities. Stay true to yourself and build a varied support system to ground you.”
Alanna’s vibrant sense of style also caught our attention. She spoke about fashion as an extension of her talents and personality. “I wear what I like and what aligns with who I am that day…” For her, embracing her individuality through style is another form of empowerment—a message she encourages others to embrace.
One of the most profound aspects of Alanna’s work is the joy she brings to others. Whether it’s a child marveling at her fairy-tale-like performances or an adult reconnecting with their inner child, her presence uplifts. “When people see me on stilts, their faces light up. It’s a joy circuit—we’re both happier for the experience.”
