Färberwaid (Isatis tinctoria) ist eine mehrjährige Pflanze, die am besten in Südeuropa gedeiht, wo sie den hochwertigsten Farbstoff liefert. Färberwaid enthält Indigo als Hauptfarbstoff. Die Pflanze hat eine extremely long rootDadurch ist es nahezu unzerstörbar. Der Farbstoff tritt gelbgrün aus dem Färbebad aus und färbt sich durch Oxidation blau. Unter den richtigen Bedingungen beginnen die Färberwaidblätter zu gären und geben dabei Farbstoff ins Wasser ab. Bis zur Einführung von Indigo Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts war Färberwaid der vorherrschende blaue Farbstoff in Europa. Der Pflanze werden heilende Eigenschaften zugeschrieben.
